About

These awards were established to recognize one faculty member and one postgraduate medical trainee who have demonstrated innovation and leadership in simulation-based medical education through contributions to postgraduate medical education at the University of Toronto.

Faculty Award

This award recognizes a faculty member that demonstrates outstanding leadership, innovation, and impact in advancing simulation-based medical education while actively embodying and promoting principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigeneity, and accessibility in curriculum design, learning environments and mentorship practices.

  • Open to faculty members (full-time, part-time, adjunct, or clinician-teacher) affiliated with PGME at the University of Toronto
  • Individuals must have been involved in PGME-related simulation-based educational activities for at least two years.
  • Previous recipients are ineligible for re-nomination within five years.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Educational Innovation: Development and/or implementation of innovative simulation-based teaching methods, curricula, or assessment tools.
  2. Impact on Learners: Demonstrated improvement in learner outcomes, skill development, or professional growth through simulation-based teaching.
  3. Scholarly Contribution: Contributions to research, publications, or presentations in the field of simulation-based education.
  4. Leadership & Mentorship: Active leadership within SBME initiatives and mentorship of residents, fellows, or junior faculty in simulation-based activities.
  5. Collaborative Engagement: Contributions to interprofessional education and collaboration across disciplines through simulation.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to incorporating EDIIA principles in simulation-based education. This may include:
    1. Designing inclusive and culturally sensitive simulation scenarios.
    2. Promoting equitable access to simulation opportunities for diverse learners.
    3. Role-modeling inclusive leadership and respectful learning environments.
    4. Advocating for EDI considerations in curriculum design and assessment

Resident Award

This award recognizes a postgraduate medical trainee at the University of Toronto who has demonstrated exceptional engagement, innovation, and leadership in simulation-based medical education.

  • The nominee must have contributed meaningfully to simulation-based educational initiatives during their residency.
  • Residents must be in good academic standing.

Selection Criteria:

 

  1. Engagement & Initiative: Active and sustained involvement in simulation-based teaching, curriculum development, or educational innovation.
  2. Scholarship & Dissemination: Contributions to scholarly work in SBME, such as research projects, presentations, or quality improvement initiatives.
  3. Leadership in Education: Demonstrated leadership in simulation-based programming, including peer-to-peer teaching, faculty collaboration, or organizing simulation events.
  4. Advocacy for Simulation: Demonstrated commitment to advancing the role of simulation in PGME and fostering a culture of innovation in medical training.
  5. Professionalism & Collaboration: Commitment to teamwork, interprofessional collaboration, and excellence as a role model within the simulation community.
  6. Demonstrated integration of EDI principles into simulation initiatives. This may include:
    1. Creating psychologically safe and inclusive simulation spaces.
    2. Ensuring diverse learner voices and perspectives are represented.
    3. Incorporating cultural competence, equity, and health disparities content into simulation scenarios.
    4. Advocacy for equitable access to simulation-based training.

 

How to Submit a Nomination

Nominations will open on October 15, 2025 and be accepted until December 15, 2025 at 11:59 pm.  

All nominations must be submitted using the online nomination form. Nominations can be completed by anyone within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine with knowledge of the nominee’s work. 

When completing the form, you will be asked to provide the following:

Impact Statements
Short statements (up to 300 words each) describing how the nominee meets each of the criteria listed above. For each, include examples of impact. Impact as it relates to each criterion may include but is not limited to: changes in knowledge, perspectives, practices, or policy; scaling/replication; innovation; advancing EDIIA.   
Confirmation of Leadership Support
For Faculty: When completing the nomination form, you will be asked to confirm that the Department Chair or Vice Chair Education is aware of and supports this nomination on the basis that the nominee's accomplishments align with the award criteria. There is no limit on how many nominations per department. For Trainees: When completing the online nomination form, you must indicate that the Residency, Fellowship, or Site Director supports the nomination on the basis that the nominee’s accomplishments align with the award criteria. There is no limit on the nominees that can be put forward by a department.
One Peer Testimony
A short peer testimony of up to ~300 words. This statement should be provided by a colleague, collaborator or supervisor.  This short personal testimony should describe the writer’s support for the nomination. This is not meant to be a summary of the nominee's merits and accomplishments but rather highlight specific experiences the writer has had with the nominee, and how these impacted the person writing the testimony or a group, institution or discipline. Examples are stronger than adjectives. 
One Learner Testimony
A short learner testimony of up to ~300 words. This statement should be provided by a former learner of the nominee. Due to the inherent power dynamics of this relationship, current learners should not be approached to provide this testimony. This short personal testimony should describe the writer’s support for the nomination. This is not meant to be a summary of the nominee's merits and accomplishments but rather highlight specific experiences the writer has had with the nominee, and how these impacted the person writing the testimony or a group, institution or discipline. Examples are stronger than adjectives.

Selection Process

  • The nominations will be reviewed and ranked by the Postgraduate Teaching Awards Committee.
  • The nominating chairs and winners will be notified by the end of March.
