About

The Sarita Verma Award for Advocacy and Mentorship In Postgraduate Medicine was established in 2010 at the end of Dr. Verma’s term as Vice Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) at the University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine, in recognition of her exceptional contributions to postgraduate medical education in Ontario. The award recognizes staff or faculty members who exhibit an exemplary level of leadership and commitment to social responsibility, mentorship, advocacy, and resident well-being.

The Sarita Verma Award for Advocacy and Mentorship In Postgraduate Medicine will be presented to the recipient along with the PGME Excellence Awards at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s annual Education Achievement Event and acknowledged at the All Program Directors meeting. The award recipient will receive $500, a certificate of recognition, and be asked to participate in a workshop or other PGME event.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Any faculty or staff member (individual or group) in the PGME programs of the University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine is eligible for nomination.  
  • Nominees will be identified by colleagues and learners as a role model for professionalism and mentorship, and involved in activities exhibiting a commitment to resident wellness, advocacy, and social responsibility.

How to Submit a Nomination

Nominations are currently closed. Nominations will next open in mid-September 2026.

All nominations must be submitted using the online nomination form. Nominations can be completed by anyone within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine with knowledge of the nominee’s work. 

When completing the form, you will be asked to provide the following:

Impact Statements
Short statements (up to 300 words each) describing how the nominee meets each of the award criteria: professionalism; mentorship; involvement in activities exhibiting a commitment to resident wellness, advocacy and social responsibility. For each, include examples of impact. Impact as it relates to each criterion may include but is not limited to: changes in knowledge, perspectives, practices, or policy; scaling/replication; innovation; advancing EDIIA. 
Confirmation of Leadership Support
When completing the nomination form, you will be asked to confirm that the Department Chair or Vice Chair Education is aware of and supports this nomination on the basis that the nominee's accomplishments align with the award criteria. There is no limit on how many nominations per department.
One Peer Testimony
A short peer testimony of up to ~300 words. This statement should be provided by a colleague, collaborator or supervisor.  This short personal testimony should describe the writer’s support for the nomination. This is not meant to be a summary of the nominee's merits and accomplishments but rather highlight specific experiences the writer has had with the nominee, and how these impacted the person writing the testimony or a group, institution or discipline. Examples are stronger than adjectives. 
One Learner Testimony
A short learner testimony of up to ~300 words. This statement should be provided by a former learner of the nominee. Due to the inherent power dynamics of this relationship, current learners should not be approached to provide this testimony. This short personal testimony should describe the writer’s support for the nomination. This is not meant to be a summary of the nominee's merits and accomplishments but rather highlight specific experiences the writer has had with the nominee, and how these impacted the person writing the testimony or a group, institution or discipline. Examples are stronger than adjectives.

Selection Process

  • Review and selection will be undertaken by the Associate Dean, PGME and PGME Executive.  
  • The award will be presented to the recipient at the Faculty’s Annual Educational Achievement Day and acknowledged at the All Program Directors meeting.
