Elective Training - Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident

1. Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada enrolled in Residency or Clinical Fellowship training program within Canada or the United States of America.

Learners currently training within Canada or the United states of America (e.g., Calgary, Alberta or ,Ottawa, Ontario or Boston, Massachusetts).

Eligibility

  • Must be currently registered and in good standing with their residency training program.
  • Must be eligible for and maintain a postgraduate education certificate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) if their residency training is outside of Ontario. Residents training within Ontario must maintain their existing postgraduate education certificate.
  • Pre-approval must be obtained from the following, prior to submitting an elective application: 
    • Your home institution program director
    • The elective preceptor or supervisor
    • The University of Toronto program director 

Duration

  • Electives exceeding 4 months (15 weeks) may require additional documentation.

Key Details

  • Application Timeline:  Applications must be submitted at least 3 months (90 days) before the elective start date.
  • Requirements: Visit the PGME Electives Online System to view the full list of required application documents. 
  • Submission Process: All applications must be submitted via the PGME Electives Online System. The PGME elective online system is exclusively for approving pre-arranged electives. It does not serve as a request or holding system.
  • Processing Fee: $100 CAD*
  • Approval: Will be communicated via email, along with instructions for completing registration requirements with the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office.
  • Certificate:  NOT issued for elective training completion.

2. Canadian Citizen and Permanent Residents of Canada enrolled in Residency or Clinical Fellowship Training (outside of North America)

Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents currently Training Outside of North America  Abroad (e.g., Sydney, Australia)

Eligibility

  • Must be currently registered and in good standing with their residency training program.
  • Must meet eligibility for licensure for a postgraduate education certificate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
  • Pre-approval must be obtained from the following, prior to submitting an elective application: 
    • Your home institution program director
    • The elective preceptor or supervisor
    • The University of Toronto program director

Duration

  • Electives exceeding 4 months (15 weeks) may require additional documentation.
