Postgraduate Elective Training – Learners who are Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents

1. Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada enrolled in a Residency or Clinical Fellowship training program (Within Canada).
Eligibility:
- Must be currently registered and in good standing with their residency or clinical fellowship program.
- Must be eligible for and maintain a Postgraduate Education Certificate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
- Those training outside of Ontario must be eligible for and obtain this certificate
- Those training within Ontario must maintain their existing certificate
- Pre-approval must be obtained from the following, prior to submitting an elective application:
- Your home institution program director
- The elective supervisor/preceptor
- The University of Toronto program director
Duration
- If your elective exceeds 4 months (15 weeks) in duration, additional documentation may be required. Please contact uoftpgelectives.pgme@utoronto.ca for guidance before submitting your application.
Key Details
- Application Timeline: Applications must be submitted at least 3 months (90 days) before the start date of your elective.
- Submission Process: All applications must be submitted through the PGME Electives Online System. This system is used exclusively to approve pre-arranged electives and does not function as a request or holding system.
- Requirements: Visit the PGME Electives Online System to view the complete list of required documents for your application.
- Elective Administration Processing Fee: $100 CAD (non-refundable)*
*Approved by the U of T Governing Council – Business Board
If you are applying under an IIAA, the elective administration processing fee is NOT required. - All other applicants must pay the non-refundable $100 administrative processing fee.

- First-time Applicants: If this is your first time applying for an elective, please select First-time Applicant fee.
- First-time Returnees: If you have completed one elective before and are now applying for a second elective, please select First-time Returnee fee.
- Second-time Returnees: If this is your third elective (i.e., returning for a second time), please add the "Returning-Second Time" as an add-on during the checkout process.
NOTE: Ensure you keep a copy of your payment receipt and upload it as part of your application.
- Approval: Approval will be communicated via email, along with instructions for completing registration requirements with the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office.
- Evaluations: If required, please bring the evaluation form from your home institution.
- Certificate: NOT issued for elective training completion.
2. Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada enrolled in Residency or Clinical Fellowship Training (Outside of Canada).
Eligibility
- Must be currently registered and in good standing with their residency or clinical fellowship training program.
- Must meet eligibility for licensure for a Postgraduate Education Certificate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
- Pre-approval must be obtained from the following, prior to submitting an elective application:
- Your home institution program director
- The elective preceptor or supervisor/preceptor
- The University of Toronto program director
Duration
- If your elective exceeds 4 months (15 weeks) in duration, additional documentation may be required. Please contact uoftpgelectives.pgme@utoronto.ca for guidance before submitting your application.

- If a Program Learning Agreement (PLA) is required (typically for U.S. schools), please reach out at least 6 months in advance to allow time for University of Toronto legal team review.
