Complete ACLS Training

Applies to Residency ONLY

The Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course is mandatory for certain residency training programs and is subsidized by the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine Postgraduate Office.  The program should inform the trainee as to whether it is mandatory or not.

To be eligible for a subsidy you must:

  • Be appointed as a postgraduate medical trainee with the University of Toronto prior to the date of the ACLS course.
  • Be an MOH-funded resident or in the Ministry’s re-patriation program or an International Specialist Physician (ISP) doing the 6-month practice.
  • Be taking the course for the first time and not a recertification.

Eligible residents can register for the course with Michael Garron Hospital, Michener Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital, North York General Hospital, or Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, free of charge by emailing MedicalEducation@tehn.ca for Michael Garron, Debbie Warner for Michener, Shunne Leung for Mount Sinai, Allison Ho for North York or Sandhya D’Souza for Sunnybrook, indicating that they are registered with the Postgraduate Office and are eligible to take the course.

Please note that only the course registration is free but there may be additional charges for training or course material at the discretion of the course provider.  In the event of any issues when registering with either Sunnybrook, North York General Hospital, Michael Garron Hospital, Mount Sinai, or the Michener Institute, residents should contact Gerard Nagalingam before choosing to pay for the course out of pocket.  If you pay out of pocket, the provider may charge the full course fee as opposed to the subsidized fee and the PGME office will only reimburse up to $350 (toward the course registration fee) if deemed eligible.

However, if you wish to take the course with any other ACLS provider (those listed above as well as others), the PGME office will provide a one-time subsidy of up to $350 (towards the course registration fee).  Please note that the subsidy doesn’t cover any training or course materials.  In addition, if you wish to take another course that is a program requirement (e.g. ATLS) instead of ACLS, the PGME office will provide a one-time subsidy of up to $350 towards the course.  Please note that the one-time subsidy is only applicable to one course (i.e. either ACLS or ATLS but not both).

To be reimbursed for the ACLS course fee, please mail the original receipt along with proof of payment to the following address:

PGME Office
Attn: Gerard Nagalingam
500 University Ave, Suite 602
Toronto, ON M5G 1V7

Also, please be sure to indicate the mailing address to which we can mail your cheque.

Alternatively, you can also forward the electronic receipts provided by the ACLS provider to Gerard Nagalingam for reimbursement.  Any questions regarding the ACLS course requirement or proof-of-completion should be addressed to the appropriate Program Director/Coordinator.  All other inquiries can be directed to Gerard Nagalingam via email or by phone at 416-978-8328.
