Safe Ride Home Pilot Project (Jan 2025 – Dec 2025)

Purpose

Launched by the University of Toronto Postgraduate Medical Education Office, in collaboration with the Office of Learner Affairs (OLA) and the Professional Association of Residents of Ontario (PARO), the Safe Ride Home Program provides financial support to learners with a one-way taxi ride home to mitigate the effects of fatigue. The pilot project is accessible to any resident who has worked an overnight call period or overnight shift and feels that they are too fatigued to safely transport themselves home.

Eligibility

The funding for this program is specific for trainees who are managing fatigue and cannot safely drive home. The following criteria must be met:

  • Must have worked an overnight call period or overnight shift longer than 12 hours*
  • Origin for the ride must be the hospital at which the call or shift was worked, the destination must be the resident's home.
  • Must obtain and submit proof of payment with date and time.
  • Feel that they are too fatigued to safely drive home.
  • Has indicated that other options have been considered.

Process 

  1. This Program will apply to all residents at University of Toronto who meet the criteria.
  2. Residents will follow the reimbursement instructions for their unique site.
  3. For hospitals that offer direct reimbursement, all original receipts must be submitted within 30 days of the ride.
