07 APRIL 2025

Your appointment/training must be approved by your assigned Visa Administrator before proceeding with the steps below: 

CPSO Registration Steps:

  • Sign Your Letter of Appointment (LOA) - Complete this step in POWER before registering with CPSO.
  • Create a CPSO Portal Account - Register and complete your application.
  • PGME Sends Your LOA - Sent to CPSO in mid-April.
  • Monitor Your CPSO Portal - Processing takes 3-5 weeks. Check regularly for updates.
  • Missing LOA? - If not in your CPSO account by end of May (or 30 days after submission), email pgme.registration@utoronto.ca to request a resend.
  • First-Time CPSO Applicants - Send your six-digit Applicant Number (AP######) to pgme.registration@utoronto.ca

Important Notes

  • Use your training site or home program office address for your CPSO license. 
  • Update your CPSO contact info if you previously listed the UofT PGME Office to prevent misdirected communications  

**Do not begin medical practice or training until you receive official confirmation from CPSO. Practicing without registration is an offence under the Regulated Health Professions Act


14 APRIL 2025

**The POWER system has switched over to the new academic year, and the learner registration portal is now available.** 


MAY 2025

  • Begin the registration process with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
    • Your CMPA coverage start date MUST align with your training start date in POWER.  For example, if your training begins on July 1, 2024, your CMPA coverage must also start on July 1, 2024, even if your first hospital shift is scheduled for a later date.  
    • If you previously held CMPA coverage through a postgraduate appointment at another Canadian institution, you must contact CMPA to update your coverage to PGME at the University of Toronto to ensure it remains active. 
    • CMPA sends daily data updates to PGME, it which may take up to 48 hours for your coverage to be reflected in your POWER account

📅 DEADLINE: Submit immunization form (signed by yourself and a health professional) and mask fit form to the PGME Form Site

  • If your CMPA coverage is not reflected in your POWER account by this date, send your CMPA Statement of Coverage to postgrad.med@utoronto.ca 
  • If your CPSO license is not reflected in your POWER account by this date, send your CPSO Certificate of Licensure to pgme.registration@utoronto.ca

15 JUNE 2025 at 12:00 (noon) ET

📅 DEADLINE: Pay the 2025-2026 Registration Fee - $980.00 CND (non-refundable)

THIS DEADLINE APPLIES ONLY TO LEARNERS WHO ARE ALREADY IN CANADA.

To prevent delays in starting training, all learners must submit their registration at least 10 business days in advance. This allows time to resolve any registration issues and meet hospital-specific registration deadlines.

  • Payment can be made only after completing all required registration steps.
  • Payments can be made via: Visa, MasterCard or American Express in POWER under the ‘Payment’ tab
  • If your appointment is less than a full year, your fee will be prorated (e.g., July to September)

2- 3 DAYS UPON ARRIVAL TO CANADA  

  1. Submit a scanned copy of your work permit to the PGME Form Site  
  2. Acquire Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) or The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) 
    • OHIP: Apply through the Ontario Ministry of Health within 10 days of arrival in Canada. 
    • UHIP: Available 20 days before the start of training. Submit the UHIP application to the PGME Form Site, once processed by PGME further details on payment will be provided.

  3. Call CMPA and update them with your:. 
    • CPSO certificate of registration 
    • Canadian address  
    • Canadian bank account 

CONFIRM REGISTRATION COMPLETED 

  • Check POWER Messages on your Initial View Screen– You are fully registered if you see:

    “Your registration is complete.  Please select ‘Reg. Confirmation’ on the POWER menu.  You will be able to print your Registration Confirmation, please ensure you select the correct training session. The registration confirmation may be needed by your hospital teaching site, U of T libraries or TCard office.” 

    For learners in the Pre-Entry Assessment Period (PEAP): You are considered fully registered if your status displays PARTIAL REGISTRATION along with the following confirmation message.

    “If you’re in a PEAP/AVP, your CPSO license will show an expiry date at the end of your PEAP/AVP.  Once PGME receives your successful final assessment from your program the expiry date will be updated”
  • A Confirmation of Registration Letter can only be printed once all registration requirements are marked as complete in POWER. CPSO, CMPA, or any other requirements cannot be waived for this

Please note that after completing PGME registration, learners must also register with their training hospital and meet hospital-specific deadlines. Early PGME registration submission ensures all necessary steps are completed on time to start training.
